Meet the Flock
Our flock has gone through several restarts due to moving and needing to thin the flock. Therefore, we restarted the flock for the most part this year! On the plus side, we were able to determine what breeds we wanted to restart. We are still adding and still locating breeds and varieties we are looking for, but we have a decent start now!
One part of our flock is being created as breeding pens that are breed specific, primarily ornamental breeds like our Polish, Silkies and bantam Cochins. The other part is our rainbow layers which will make up our egg baskets that will someday be publicly available. These breeds are ones that we want for various reasons and lay pretty colors of eggs. They may or may not have a rooster or be purebred. For instance, our Maran flock will be both for breeding (someday show!) and for egg production for our rainbow baskets.

Marans
Like everyone else, we desire those chocolatey colored eggs in our basket! But we wanted to be a bit different, so we started with "Blue Cuckoo" Marans which turned out to be Blue Coppers. Then we added a Blue Copper and a couple Black Coppers followed by some actual Cuckoos! Now, we have a decent started flock of Marans which should be giving us eggs any day!
Silkies
Fluffy. Small. Cute. Silly.
Silkies are the pets of the yard for most people that keep chickens. They are adorable, fluffy and have great personalities. Many love to be held and act like pets. Plus, they walk funny! Silkies are not the best for egg production, but they make up for it in comedic relief.

Naked Necks, aka, Turkens
Naked Necks are our newest added breed but have quickly become an important part. Although I had no plans of adding these "beauties" to the flock, I am grateful for their addition. They have proven to have great personalities and get along well with other chicks and breeds. They forage well and are not big escape artists. Our Naked Necks are still in the teen pen, so they are housed with the Silkies and our older chicks before they are turned out to the open yard but they get along well with them all!
